WINDOW IN THE JUNGLE: Costa Rica's nature lodges put you in the middle of the rainforest.
By Norie Quintos, Tortuga Lodge & Gardens, Tortuguero – Sea turtles have been coming to Tortuguero beach for eons, as if pulled by some magnetic force. Between the months of June and October, they come in droves to lay eggs, after which the hatchlings make the perilous scramble from the beach to the sea. Sign up for a night tour to see the 300-pound gentle giants lay their eggs, cover them, and waddle back to the sea – the experience is interpreted by park staff. Tortuga Lodge makes a great base, affording comfort and fine cuisine minutes from the national park established to protect the endangered turtles. There are also tours by electric outboard on area creeks for up-close nature sightings that include crocodiles, caimans, monkeys, bats, birds, and bugs. Nice touch: Water coolers full of clean drinking water are available outside rooms to eliminate plastic bottle waste.
