MASTER NATURALIST GUIDES
Born May 19, 1940, Jim is Costa Rica Expeditions' Master Naturalist Guide Emeritus, with nearly three decades of guiding with us. Although Jim is now retired, he continues to advise the company and our guides.
Jim has extensive field experience with animal surveys for the Smithsonian Institution, Scripps Institute and the Farallon Islands off California. Before joining Costa Rica Expeditions as head naturalist in 1980, he did six years of biological consulting work and independent research throughout Costa Rica.
An avid birder, Jim has guided trips for numerous Audubon Society groups, the Americans Society (which is chaired by David Rockefeller), The Nature Conservancy, the NY Zoological Society, the American Museum of Natural History, and the Oceanic Society, among others.
Jim and his wife, Barbara, have two adult children, Jonathan and Jennifer. In his free time, Jim volunteers at INBIO and tends his orchid collection (he especially loves miniatures).
TESTIMONIALS: Jan. 29, 2001 “Thank you for making our visit to Monteverde such an outstandingly enjoyable one.”
Dear JimLewis: Frank and I want to thank you for making our visit to Monteverde such an outstandingly enjoyable one. Your knowledge, not only of birds, but of the history, natural and human, of the area added greatly to our experience. Plus, you were a most delightful and accommodating companion.
Our time at Tango Mar we also much enjoyed. A most comfortable and well-laid out hotel with friendly and helpful staff. We signed up for the evening boat trip from Pochote across Bahia Balenna to mangroves. Great birding. We are glad we did it.
You probably heard that we quite inadvertently flew off in the wrong plane from Tango Mar to San Jose. We much appreciate the way the staff at Costa Rica Expeditions handled the mix-up. And we certainly will be more careful in the future about checking that it is our name on the flight docket. We are so used to Balch being mispronounced (in the U.S. as well as in other countries) that we tend to say "yes" to any pronunciation that even vaguely approximates it. Now we are already reading about and planning for the two places in the south of Costa Rica that you recommended to us: Lapa Rios and Wilson Botanical Gardens. We shall certainly request you as our guide again and hope that you will be free.
