WHAT THE GUIDEBOOKS SAY
Fodors.com (2009) - "This 740-acre private reserve and resort community is an odd and overwhelming mix of nature, residential development, and vacation spot. Punta Leona's attractions include three beaches, a tropical forest, a butterfly farm, and guided bird-watching hikes... The little "city" contains everything from restaurants and pools to a grocery store and church, plus plenty of amusements, including a zip-line tour, tennis court, and mini-golf course. Frequent shuttles travel between the rooms, restaurants, and beaches. Hotel guests, homeowners, and time-share members contribute to crowded beaches on weekends, especially in the dry season, when this place can be a bit of a zoo."
COSTA RICA EXPEDITIONS' DESCRIPTION
About 90 mins. from San Jose, on the coast, the 108-room Punta Leona Resort includes three restaurants, pools, tennis court and three beaches. Rooms have two double beds, private bath, a/c, cable tv, mini-fridge and safety box. The hotel is located away from the beach so a short walk is required (about 10 mins.) or you may take the resort’s shuttle bus to the beach hopping on at the complex’s central building. An 18-hole golf course is nearby, at Marriott Los Sueños Resort.
Surrounding the Resort is the Punta Leona Rainforest Reserve, home to 330 migratory and resident bird species, including the Scarlet Macaw, Marbled Wood-Quail, Three-wattled Bellbird, Toucans, Trogons, Manakins, Flycatchers, and Hummingbirds. The reserve is also home to White-faced and Spider Monkeys, sloths, White-nosed Coatimundi, tyras, raccoons, iguanas and a large number of butterflies. Three easily accessible, well-marked trails make bird watching easy for the whole family. Along the way there are hummingbird feeding stations and feeders that attract birds and mammals. Hot climate.
