Close to San Jose’s International Airport and en route to the Pacific beaches, La Garita Orchid Gardens features the country’s largest diversity of flowering orchid hybrids and species. Stroll down “Orchid Avenue” to appreciate orchids and other rare tropical plants, as well as exotic birds, water gardens and a lake. Learn about the orchid’s lifecycle and discover why orchids are so special and difficult to reproduce. The orchid collection is best appreciated in the greenhouse, where hundreds of species are on display, including the “Guaria Morada,” Costa Rica’s national flower.
Although flowering is varied and continuous throughout the year, February, March and April are the months with the highest peak in flowers. La Garita has a small souvenir store and outdoor restaurant-café, which serves lunch, pastries and gourmet style Costa Rican coffee. La Garita Gardens can be enjoyed by people of all ages as the main trails are wheelchair and stroller accessible. Open Tuesday to Sunday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.
