Choosing the right footwear for Costa Rica is important. Conditions vary across the country—from rainforest trails and uneven paths to beaches and occasionally muddy terrain—so comfort and versatility are key.
A lightweight pair of closed-toe shoes is the most important item to pack. These are suitable for guided walks, hanging bridges, nature trails, and general day-to-day use.
Look for good grip on uneven or wet surfaces, breathable materials for humid conditions, and quick-drying fabrics. Trail running shoes are often the best option. Heavy hiking boots are generally unnecessary unless you are planning more demanding hikes.
Sandals are useful for coastal areas, short walks, and time at your hotel. They are also practical after activities when you may want to change out of closed shoes.
Sport sandals with straps provide better support and are suitable for light walking. Flip-flops can be used at the pool or beach but are not recommended for extended use.
For activities such as rafting, canyoning, waterfall visits, or walking near rivers, water-friendly or quick-drying shoes can be useful.
In many cases, regular walking shoes will work if they dry quickly, but dedicated water shoes provide better grip on slippery surfaces.
For children, comfort and practicality are key. Activities often involve uneven trails, humidity, and occasional mud, so the right footwear makes a clear difference in their experience.
A lightweight pair of closed-toe shoes with good grip is recommended for walks and activities, along with a pair of secure sandals that are easy to put on and suitable for short walks.
Shoes should be well broken in before the trip, with soles that provide good traction. Quick-drying materials are ideal, and carrying an extra pair of socks during the day is recommended in case shoes get wet.
Avoid brand-new shoes and use footwear that is already broken in. Lightweight, moisture-wicking socks improve comfort in humid conditions. Mud is common in rainforest areas, especially during the green season. In most cases, two pairs of shoes per person are sufficient.
